New Year's Resolution
Early Happy New Year's everyone.
I'm starting my New Year's resolution today - I just joined the Weight Watcher's online program for 3 months. I have 16 pounds to loose....not a huge amount but I don't have many clothes left that fit and the few that fit aren't that flattering.
Yesterday I was at a friend's house for tea and she showed me a picture of her younger sister who lost weight on the Program and she looks amazing. I visited with the younger sister over the summer with her young son and she was carrying a few extra pounds. And now...all I can say is Wow. I am so inspired.
I bought the 3 month online package for $55.
I won't use this blog to actively track my progress or inundate you with the minutia of Weight Watchers, possibly you won't even notice that the recipes have changed on the blog, but I need to do this for myself. I find it hard to not over eat - I enjoy food, cooking, meal times etc and a blog that has a food component is not the key to weight loss success....not for me anyway.
Earlier in the blog I tried to loose weight following the South Beach method but I don't seem to do well on my own - it's embarrassingly so. I need a community. Driving to a weekly meeting doesn't feel right anymore but I'm hoping that the new online tools will feel like a community and keep me motivated.
My weigh-in days are Sunday. I've done Weight Watchers a few times over the years, especially after birthing my little pups. I've been an active member 5 times - once after every birth (read 50 pounds times 4) and then once last year when the program was offered at work. Now I"m just settling into middle age, as in no more pregnancies, and weight is settling around my middle.
The times when I've been an active member, my weight loss was best when the meeting was on Sunday. The worst was the Thursday weigh in day. Something about the idea that weekends are a rest day didn't help my progress. When the meeting was on Sunday afternoon, I didn't feel compelled to "cheat". Why is Monday the proverbial start for everything?
Enjoy the last day of the year - may the best of last year be the worst of the new year.

Snack Buddy
A few of you have asked "what the heck is a snack buddy"?
When I prep dinner at the end of a long day, I tend to graze and snack my way to dinner to the point that I've already eaten enough dinner before I even sit down. And then I eat the actual meal! Not good for the waistline.
I've restarted the concept of having a set little snack on the counter. I eat the snack, which I've accounted for in my daily calorie total, and that's it. No more until dinner.
My goal is to have a pretty little dish with a bit of spicy, crunchy, veggie and protein.
Enjoy!

Meet My New Snack Buddy
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view - hi Honey!) one of my colleagues has started bringing pottery to the office on behalf of her very talented sister, owner of Blue Heron Pottery.
I bought a cute little serving plate today, perfect for that pre-dinner snack.
Today I had a 3 tortilla chips, a chopped carrot and 5 almonds with a bit of left-over tahini sauce. Perfect!
For dinner tonight, I had a bit of canned wild-caught Alaskan salmon, baked fries, baked fish stick, and baked kale, dressed with a bit of sourcream and hot sauce.

Day 24 - Blustery and Overcast Saturday
Breakfast - Kris and I had soft-boiled eggs and Jake had oatmeal bars with milk.
For lunch I'm making 6 bean soup and bread. I have 6 beans on hand, use more or less, what ever you have in your pantry. This is a very flexible recipe. Or use a mix from Bob's Red Mill.
6-Bean Soup
Soak 1/2 cup each of dried kidney, pinto, and black beans.
Pour 1/4 cup each of split pea, black eyed peas, and lentils into a bowl and set aside.
| Red kidney, black and pinto beans preparing to soak for an hour before pressure cooking. |
Pressure cook or just cook the large beans until starting to soften, about 30 minutes in a pressure cooker. Pour off the water, add soup stock (I had chicken from last weekend), add in the dried smaller beans and gently simmer.
Mince onion, garlic, bell pepper, carrots and saute in butter or oil. Add to simmering beans. Add some chopped meat - chicken, pork, sausage etc.
I had left over chicken breast. Add a tablespoon or so of tomato sauce or paste to balance out the flavor along with a shot of hot sauce, salt, pepper, and Old Bay seasoning. I added a bit of fresh parsley. The soup was thick and flavorful.
The boys had there soup with fresh bread and jam.
Dinner - a french-style meal of roasted potatoes, romaine, over easy eggs, and a bit of left over hummus.
The boys had left-over pizza and strawberry smoothie
Until tomorrow!

Day 23
I'm not sure what to title today's post...resignation maybe? There is no magic bullet and sometimes I'll have to be hungry. It was a cold morning coming in (26F), which isn't bitterly cold but a sign that colder weather is on it's way. Something in my primal brain says "eat a big bowl of hot oatmeal with all the fixings, save yourself from freezing to death". It's possible the voices in my head are a little over anxious and tend to over-exaggerate.
For those of you who haven't been to KERF's blog, check out her tribute to oatmeal, this gal loves her oatmeal. Includes great pictures of her morning breakfast.
Breakfast - yogurt (170)
Lunch - I ordered a sampler platter and promptly placed half in a container to go. Ate 1 baked chicken kefta, one falafel, 1/2 of hummus, 1/2 of parsley salad, 1/3 of pita bread.
Snack Buddy - 1/4 Granny Smith apple with peanut butter
Dinner - A big salad with the lunch left-overs divided among 4 salad bowl. The boys had pizza too.

End of Third Week - Houston We Have a Set-Back
It's cruel, the 2.5 pounds I lost last week made a return appearance! So after 3 weeks, I'm down 1.5 pounds. Not a great start. I'm telling myself it's all a learning experience, today is another day blah blah blah
I am disappointed though but I don't have anybody to blame but myself. Nobody made me make apple cake with caramel frosting and nobody twisted my arm to have a few bites.
I can also rationalize that maybe I didn't really loose 2.5 pounds the week before and ....OK I'll stop now.
Today is Day 22, start of the fourth week. Onward and upward..or is it downward!
------------------------------------
I'm done sulking. I've decided to be French and sophisticated today. While supposedly, French women don't count calories, I'm not ready for that transition and I'm not sure about the smoking either but fancy lingerie sounds good.
Breakfast - yogurt (170)
Lunch - full pouch Tasty Bite Spinach Dal and a chocolate (350)
Snack Buddy - hummus and tortilla chips (400)
Dinner - Breakfast Night 2 eggs, salad greens, hummus, oven roasted potatoes (450)
The troops had chicken wings

Day 21 - Thinking About this Past Week
This is the last day of the third week and I was thinking about my approach to journaling my meals the last few days. . The previous weeks were more planned out and written down bite for bite. I started the third week feeling good about my success the last two weeks. Tthis week meal planning and journaling was a little more haphazard and I don't think I was as honest about the little "bites" here and there. I journald the main meals and snack early in the day but not always update the daily totals when there were some indiscretions. The old habit of having a bite of this or a lick of that started creeping into my routine again. My success over the last two weeks relaxed my resolve. I believe that I"ll be "paying the piper" at the scale tomorrow morning.
This reminds me of all the other times that I've embarked on a weight loss journey and became frustrated with the idea that I will never be an intuitive eater, described by Wiki as
This reminds me of all the other times that I've embarked on a weight loss journey and became frustrated with the idea that I will never be an intuitive eater, described by Wiki as
Intuitive eating is a nutrition philosophy based on the premise that becoming more attuned to the body's natural hunger signals is a more effective way to attain a healthy weight; rather than keeping track of the amounts of energy and fats in foods. It's a process that is intended to create a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body. Intuitive Eating, just like the many books available today, goes by many names, including non-dieting or the non-diet approach, normal eating, wisdom eating, conscious eating and more.
It's frustrating to be reminded yet again that I will always have to keep track of what I eat on a daily basis. I don't seem to have enough common sense or natural ability to gauge when enough is enough and put the fork down. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably not the worst thing in the world to forever jot down what I eat and count the calories. Onward and upward...today, I will journal better and not succumb to the BLTs (bites, licks, and tastes). As we say at the office, it's all about continuous improvement
Breakfast - 2 eggs (150)
Lunch - salad greens, grilled chicken, balsamic dressing (300) chocolate (50)
Snack Buddy - V8, peanut butter, carrots and celery (250)

Dinner - 1 cup left over green tomato chili from this weekend with a few tortilla chips (400?)
How about you, are you an intuitive eater or do you need stricter accounting in your day?

Day 20 - Got Heart Health Covered
With today's breakast, I have my South Beach, heart-health, and the "flat-belly" diets covered! And it isn't even lunch time yet.
Avocado: Avocados are good source of heart-healthy fats. Avocados are excellent source of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that helps to reduce cholesterol. Not only that, avocados are rich with potassium that controls the blood pressure. Avocados also raise the amount of HDL (High-density lipoprotein) in the body.

Breakfast - can of salmon, almonds, and guacamole (300)
Lunch - salad greens, grilled chicken, light dressing (300)
Snack Buddy - V8, peanut butter, celery (250), Halloween candy (150)
Dinner - a stew made of left over roast chicken, Swiss chard, tomato paste, olive oil, onion, bell pepper with a bit of pecorino cheese on top(400?)
For a days total of 1300 calories. Craig and the boys had the sauce served with whole wheat noodles, slice of whole wheat toast, and a a smoothie made with acai berries, green apple, and a jar of tropical fruit.

Day 19 - Monday....
I tend to feel more hungry on Monday mornings, probably due to all the extras I eat over the long weekend. I'm lucky to work a schedule that allows me to have every other Friday off from work. With the extra time at home, I tend to cook and bake more elaborate meals. There is also more bike riding and exercising to keep weight in check but I think my stomach gets used to more food over a long weekend and a Monday always seems to be an adjustment.
Lunch is going to be another packet of Tasty Bites. I haven't tried this flavor yet but it has a lot going for it - cashews! An entire packet contains
280 calories
20 g fat
18 carbs/8 g fiber
8 protein
The ingredients are: water, green peas, tomatoes, onion, fenugreek, greens, cashew, spinach, cream, watermelon seeds, sunflower oil, salt, garlic, ginger, spices. Works for me. I'll catch up on animal protein for dinner, which I tend to find more filling.
Breakfast - 4 leftover chard quiche - equivalent of 2 eggs, splash of milk, bit of cheese (200?)
Lunch - V8 (30) and Tasty Bite Agra Peas and Greens (whole packet) (280)
Snack Buddy - small handfull of cashews (150)
Dinner - 1/2 small can salmon (100), guac, raw swiss chard, few fried potatoes, almonds (400)
For a daily total of about 1300 calories. I had a few oven fried potatoes and the kids also had a smoothie and baked fish sticks. This is another really cool hand made pottery bowl by Denise Kleiner.
The smoothie was made with a frozen packet of achia berry mix for 1, red apple, can of pineapple, few leaves and stalks of swiss chard, and some water, all lovingly mixed in the vitamix. Split between 5 people.

Day 18 - Another Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
I'm not sure if the sky could be any bluer or the air any more crisp. This has been the most incredible October.
Breakfast - 2 eggs sort of scrambled in the microwave. Beats cleaning a pan!
Lunch - cup of homemade chili see recipe here
Dinner - Swiss chard quiche from Muffin Tin Mania I did substitute cheddar cheese for goat! I also may have chopped up more than 2 cups of chard so I put the chard into 12 cups along with a few shreds of cheese and then added the 6 eggs and 1/3 cup of milk. Baked for 20 minutes as directed. I'm thinking breakfast is ready for Monday. I had 3 little quiche plus extra raw chard and a bit of left over roasted kale.
Tonight, Craig and I biked a few miles across town to our Sunday night dance class. We agreed that if we at least learn the basic foxtrot, we'll call it success. Dancing is harder than it looks! I forget if we've already had 3 or 4 lessons but we seem to be stymied with the whole "turn the corner" thing. We manage to zigzag back and forth along the long axis of the room, then we trip and stumble turning the corner, then a short run and then another embarrassing corner turn. It's always a relief to restart along a long wall.

Day 17 - Another Day
Another beautiful Saturday in Ann Arbor. Yahoo said the low was 30F this morning but it sure didn't feel that cold as we biked the 3.5 miles to Central Campus for another Saturday Morning Physics lecture. A Jesuit brother talked the Vatican and their Planetary Science research. The lecture was surprisingly entertaining.
Breakfast - 2 soft boiled eggs
Snack - Snitched a bite of donut and bagel at Saturday Morning Physics
After the lecture, we rode home at a leisurely pace, stopping at a pond near the UofM music school where the boys poked at crawfish.
Lunch - 2 large romaine leaves with 1/2 of a small can salmon, a smear of hummus, and a few carrot sticks
Dinner - I'm roasting a Whole Foods "happy chicken" that I'll serve with oven baked french fries, gravy, kale chips, dinner rolls, peas, and apple cake. I will have some skinless chicken breast, kale chips and a hint of gravy with fries, and a bite of apple cake.
Another beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Day 16 - Wishing for a Do-Over!
I woke up full of enthusiasm and then made some poor choices! I had choices but didn't make the smarter ones. With the amount of food eaten out today, I didn't bother with calorie/carb counts today. For sure a better day tomorrow.
Breakfast - 2 soft boiled eggs
And then the bad choices started stacking up.
We rode a few miles around town and ended up at Great Plains Burgers. There menu consists mostly of burgers, the very best french fries, and shakes.
I ordered a burger with Thousand Island dressing, lettuce, tomato and grilled onions. Now why the grilled onion and Thousand, I don't know....I did cut the burger in half right away and gave it to Craig. Craig also had a burger, we split a basket of fries and I had water to drink. The food was wonderful and came to about $17 for the 2 of us.
I promised myself that, OK this wasn't the best choice, but I could redeem myself with dinner...but no...
Friday night is pizza night, which I usually make from scratch along with a salad. The afternoon filled up with errands so I picked up Dominos pizzas, thinking that I'll still make a salad and just have greens - no pizza. But no....
Dinner - small slice of medium hand tossed bacon pizza
So I'm setting my sights on tomorrow.

End of Week 2 Weigh In - Day 15 of a new start
Wow - sometimes things do work out.
Results:
Starting Weight = 139
End of Week 1 = 137.5 (-1.5)
End of Week 2 = 135 (-1.5-2.5=4)
Goal by December 30th is to reach a weight of 120 pounds for a total loss of 19 pounds. Four down, 15 to go.
In 2 weeks I've lost 4 pounds by limiting carbs and eating more lean protein, especially salmon (mostly canned) and eggs. I don't feel physical hunger, it's the psychological hunger that needs to be over come.
According to my tables and charts, I'm on track. I would like to show results on the blog using charts and graphs but I haven't been able to figure that out just yet, any suggestions?
For a real South Beach Diet experience, a person does two weeks of hardcore, limited carbs - no fruit, no high carb veggies, no alcohol, no chocolate, no processed meats, and in the early days of SBD, there was a moratorium on coffee. Starting the third week, healthy carbs like sweet potatoes are reintroduced into the diet.
I haven't totally followed the first 2 weeks of restriction - there was some carrots, a bit of potato, coffee, wine, and chocolate...but not as if I inhaled a box of donuts or ate a bucket of fried chicken. The few indiscretions were modest. The first time I tried SBD, a few years ago, I did follow the 2 week program to the letter, lost about 7 pounds but was feeling totally miserable - no diet/healthy lifestyle is worth giving up coffe, wine and chocolate. I was tired AND cranky. Now it's possible that I have a coffee addiction but that's another post! I dug deep into the reason why SBD limited coffe duringn the Phase 1 period and it was pychological than limiting carbhohdrates. The theory was that drinking coffee encourage sugar consumption, and it was limited in Phase 1 to not trigger another need for sugar.
Coffee doesn't equate to sugar for me. I don't drink coffe and then go hunt down a donut. My coffee is inhaled straight-up. No creamer, no sugar, no nothing. So I justify drinking coffee all day long. And South Beach no longer restricts the consumption of coffee either. Turns out people just rebelled - no coffee, NO DIET! The caffeine withdawl headaches weren't worth the trouble for most people to stick to the program.
With all that blathering (leading no where), I'm thinking I might coast with this a little longer, instead of introducing more carby veggies and fruit, and see what happens. There haven't been many instances of feeling deprived, there must be just enough carbs in the mix to feel sated.
Breakfast of champions - 1/4 cup hummus (150), can of salmon (200), few tortilla chips (100)
Lunch - 8 oz white chicken chili (140), chocolate nugget (50), v-8 (30)
Snack Buddy - carrots (50)
Dinner - Breakfast Night...2 egss, 1/4 cup hummus, salad greens (150, 150, 50 = 350)
For a daily total calorie count of 1200, or so.
The kids and spouse enjoyed some Whole Food fig newtons and whole grain bread with dinner.

Day 14 - last day of second week
The good thing about blogging about weight issues or paying for a diet program is the accountability. Up until the last time I went to Weight Watchers, the idea of paying and not losing weight was abhorrent - by god I was paying for this so it had better work (and I better do what I'm told). As I approach weigh-in day, I find myself sticking more closely to the program, not sneaking in extra carbs. After all, who wants to fail in front of the Internet!
I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a reminder of my stupidity but I've lost and gained weight so many times but still consider the Weight Watcher's program a success. The first time I went was after my first kid was born and I had packed on some serious pregnancy pounds that weren't going anywhere, 6 months after giving birth. A year later I was at goal. Yes!
Then this cycle repeats itself - get pregnant, gain a hugely ridiculous amount of weight, slink back to Weight Watchers, loose the weight, get pregnant - I have 4 kids, you get the picture. Up and down.
About this time last year, I had slimmed down to a pleasing figure on my own, but somewhere along the way, weight slowly started creeping back up and I can't blame the kids. Bad choices, mindless eating, the usual excuses. I would have a stern conversation with myself, remind myself I've only gained a few pounds but I never lost any weight, just gained a few more pounds until I woke up two weeks ago and realized I had gained a bit more than a few pounds and 19 extra pounds isn't that attractive.
The one time Weight Watcher's failed for me was a few months ago when the office sponsored a 12 weeks session. I'm not sure what it was, probably a combination of things. I believe in the program, but yet I actually gained weight during the 12 weeks. How humiliating. The leader was a great speaker, a bit older than me, and I'm pretty sure she weighed more than me. She didn't look fit or slim - which I didn't find very inspiring. The assistant made snarky comments, I hated going to the scale. She actually said once at a weigh in "my, you've gained a few pounds this week!", loudly enough for others to overhear. Which pretty much put the kabosh on the 12-week session for me. And of course I wasn't paying for the program.
As a seasoned veteran of diets, I understand the principles of weight loss - eat less, exercise more. After realizing recently that I need to take control of my eating, I decided that I didn't want to chance a second bad experience with Weight Watchers so I decided to go it alone with a reasonable program (South Beach). I'm finding new accountability in blogging. After two weeks, my enthusiasm for my plan is still high and I"m quietly optimistic that I'll reach my goal (19 pounds by Dec 31). Thanks for being out there.
Breakfast - small can salmon (200), 2 tablespoons sour cream (60), 1/2 stalk celery (260)
Lunch - cream of tomato and basil soup with a few fries at Casey's (400?)
Snack Buddy- a few leaves of kale chips and 2 dips of hummus with 2 tortilla chips (200)
Dinner - 1/2 cup refried black beans, salad greens, shredded carrots, salsa (300?)
Wish me luck for tomorrow.

Halloween Candy Nightmare
I can hear the candy calling to me from around the office. Well-meaning people are bringing in Fun-sized candy and stocking baskets and Halloween displays. It's a chore to not dive in head first/mouth open. It's not as if I didn't know that candy is not calorie-free but for some reason, when not vigilant, I tend to start grazing.
