And so another chapter of our lives is hauled off

October 19, 2010 Update: Yesterday we received the W-2 statement from Purple Heart concluding the transaction.  The whole process took a little less than 2 months and was completed without a hitch.

Boat hauled off by towing company hired by Purple Heart
Late today, another tow truck company stopped by to pick up the boat on behalf of Purple Heart Donations.  The boat will be auctioned off and proceeds to benefit military personell.  This leaves us with an aging lawn mower, rototiller, and chain saw...all of which will be replaced with environmentally friendly, non-oil dependent energy alternatives.
A husband and wife team came with 2 towing vehicles, making the rounds of the surrounding communities picking up various cars and other cast-offs.  There was some trash-talk of the dispicable state of Ann Arbor roads and how congested the area was with all the road repair and construction.

The journey continues.

100% Organic Whole Wheat Bread

I bake bread about once a week.  For years we hand-ground Eden's organic hard red winter wheat and mixed it with white floor for a great artisan no-knead bread baked in a cast iron dutch oven.  And let me tell you, it's a chore/labor of love to hand-grind hard winter wheat.  Here's a picture of the bread that is only 50% organic wheat that I used to make before I became a Vitamix owner- fabulous but not as good as it could be.

When I make my new and improved 100% whole wheat bread using my Vitamix 5200 this weekend, I'll post the recipe and pictures.  Grinding wheat with a Vitamix 5200 takes about a minute-plus.  Incredible!

My Favorite Kitchen Tool

We are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.  And what did we give ourselves?  Why a blender of course.  But not just any blender - a Vitamix 5200!

I have 3 favorite recipes so far - a spicy vegie tomato drink, a totally organic whole wheat bread, and instant strawberry ice-cream.

We've owned the Vtiamix 5200 for a few weeks now and I've used it almost every day since it arrived.

My mother always told me that a present doesn't have an electrical cord but I'm pretty sure for this event and present, she might be wrong.  Not a lump in a drink and icecream in 30 seconds.

Vitamix almost instand strawberry icecream
Place 1 cup milk in machine, add 1/2 cup sugar, and 16 ounces of frozen strawberries.  Start machine on Varibable speed 1 and increase quickly to 10 and then switch to High.  This should only take about 30 seconds, when the machine sound changes, stop machine and enjoy.  4 servings at 100 calories each.

More of my favorite recipes to come.

Vacation Plans Using Amtrak

I'm so excited!  We're planning our first car-free family vacation to the Windy City - Chicago here we come via Amtrak.

The Empire Builder leaves Ann Arbor early Saturday mornings, arrives in downtown Chicago by noon and leaves Chicago at dinner time every day, with arrival back in Ann Arbor by midnight.  We plan to bike to and from the Ann Arbor train station (with minimal luggage).

We've never been to Chicago...what should we see, considering that we'll be downtown, near the train station for 24 hours with only our walking shoes and backpacks?

Herfy

A while back in my career, I worked at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State.  Hanford is a former nuclear weapons production facility that was built during World War II and active through the Cold War.  Starting in the 1990's, the facility was in clean up and deconstruction mode.

As is the usual custom for new employees, I was given a site tour by some of the long-timers - second generation workers.  Their fathers were scientists and engineers and the next generation were environmental clean up experts.  The surrounding towns and people were surreal, the place was a like a throw-back to the 1950's.  We all lived in houses built in the 40's by the Army Corps of Engineers, the men hunted and fished like a religion, and women quilted.  We also popped out a lot of little pups (aka children).

One of the second generation workers was telling me about his family - his wife and 5 kids. In a good-natured way, I learned that after birthing 5 kids and living a comfortable life in "gods country", his wife was sort of "herfy", which I took to mean pleasingly plump.

After living there a few years, I bought a bike that we nicknames Herfy.  A 3-wheeled adult tricycle with a huge basket in the back to carry everything I would want to take with me.

And now with our car-free lifestyle, Herfy has a new life and purpose, hauling heavy things.  Today, Herf will be cleaned up, tuned up, and used to haul a propane tank for refueling.  The propane tank ran out the day we sold our cars for scrap. As it turns out, every problem has a solution.

We Are Almost Zipsters!

There will be times throughout the year when we will want to travel by car.  Over the weekend, we signed-up for a Zipcar membership and are anticipating our first trip.  We live about 1.5 miles from a Zipcar location, which means that one of us will bike to the car and bring the car home for the rest of the family or simply continue from the Zipcar parking spot to run errands.

After doing the math ourselves, using a Zipcar a few hours per month is still cheaper than car ownership.  Our experience with Zipcar remains to be seen but we are optimistic.  The concept of "car sharing" feels right for our needs. See http://www.zipcar.com/ for more information.

We anticipate using a Zipcar for the following types of trips
  • Monthly shopping excursions for bulky items - 40 pound sacks of wheat, oats, beans, toilet paper etc
  • The ocasional family outing - 4 to 5 people wanting to go a little further than Ann Arbor
  • Kayaking on the Huron River
  • Large purchases for home repairs and improvements when a Home Depot truck is still too big
  • There are 22 Zipcars available in Ann Arbor, including a Honda Insight hybrid. We are excited at the possibility of trying different cars for different types of trips.
The benefits of a Zipcar from the Zipcar website:
  • Each and every Zipcar takes 15-20 personally owned vehicles off the road.
  • After joining Zipcar, 90% of members drive 5,500 miels or less per year.  That adds up to more than 32 million gallons of crude oil left in the ground.
  • 10% of the population is expected to adopt car sharing as their primary mode of transportation.
  • Zipcar members save more than $500 per month vs. car ownership.

And Another Reason to Be Car Free - highest gas prices in Michigan

Why do Ann Arborites pay the highest gas prices in the State of Michigan?

See today's article here at AnnAbor.com reporting from AAA.

The Boat is Next

With our cars out of the way and the garage getting cleaned out, it's time to get rid of another gasoline consumer - the powerboat.  We own a 2003 Bayliner bur rarely take it out of the garage.  Now that we don't have anything to tow the boat with, we're donating the boat to Purple Heart  http://purpleheartcars.org/.  As with Junk My Car, Purple Heart will schedule a tow truck for pickup and haul it away.  Once Purple Heart sells the boat, we will receive a receipt for a tax deduction.

We received notification this morning that a "check is in the mail" for our junked mini-van.  With that money, we are purchasing a trailer to attach to a bike for serious shopping expeditions!  Photos to come.

Be well

Day 2 Junk My Car

I asked the internet how to get rid of a car and several websites popped up including Junk My Car at http://www.junkmycar.com/how_it_works.asp.  The steps are easy: type in the car's VIN number and zip code and an initial bid is displayed.  If the bid is acceptable, follow the bouncing ball and the deal is sealed.  Less than 24 hours later, tow trucks showed up to remove our two family cars.  After the titles are cleared, we will receive our money via check from Junk My Car.

The tow truck driver's are hired by the scrap company that bid on the cars.  The more talkative tow truck driver said that we would have gotten more money and recieved it on the spot if we had contracted directly with a towing company or scrap yard.  Hindsight is always 20/20.

If you have cars that you would like to scrap, consider using Junk My Car or contact Sam with Triple-S Towing directly at 248-255-6108.

Day 1 Without a Car

I'm looking out  my front window and the driveway is empty - our first day without any family cars.  It's a bit scary and exhilerating at the same time.

We came to to the "place" because our auto insurance carrier insisted on adding our son to our policy even though he's 10 hours away at college (without a car) and our cars were old (1996 and 1998).  It was time for change. So our cars were sold for scrap and hauled off by tow trucks.  A deal that took minutes to negotiate and not much longer to see through.

This blog will chronicle our decision to be car-free, how we cope without car ownership, our experiences with ZipCars, rental cars, biking, and public transportation.

Peace
Astrid
